MIGRAINE AND SLEEP PROBLEMS

Migraine and Sleep Problems

Sleep problems are more common in people with migraine. The most common sleep problems we observe in people with migraine are insomnia, teeth grinding and sleep apnoea.

People with insomnia have difficulty falling asleep and maintaining sleep, early morning awakenings and complaints of poor quality sleep. Insomnia disrupts daily activities; it causes fatigue, loss of attention, concentration and motivation.

Another sleep problem is bruxism, teeth grinding during sleep. Bruxism causes headache, limitation of movement in the jaw and pain when waking up in the morning. These patients generally have a stressful structure and their sleep quality is low.

Another sleep problem in people with migraine is sleep apnoea; sleep apnoea is a condition in which breathing stops many times during sleep; patients with sleep apnoea usually wake up with a headache or do not feel rested after a full night's sleep, they may have sleepiness during the day.

In people with migraine, sleep time, duration and sleep quality should be questioned in detail. Sleep is a period in which both our whole body and our brain regenerate themselves.
